Q- What
is special education for 3, 4 and 5 year olds?
A-Special
education is individualized instruction for young children who are experiencing
challenges in their learning development.
Q- Who
provides special education?
A- School
districts are required by law to provide special education for any child who
requires these services.
Q- How do
I know if my child needs services?
A- The
school district offers a free screening every spring or you can contact the
district at any time to request an evaluation.
Q- Who is
eligible for services?
A- Any
child is eligible if they have a significant delay in one or more areas of
development such as cognitive, motor, language, social/emotional or adaptive
development.
What Happens During the Evaluation Process?
School
professionals along with parents will decide on what areas to evaluate.
Assessments
will be conducted using a variety of assessments tools and personnel.
The
results of the assessment will be discussed in terms of eligibility for special
education services.
Upon
meeting the criteria for eligibility, placement will be made.
What happens if my child qualifies for special education
preschool?
You will
be asked to meet with a team of professionals to develop an Individualized
Education Program (IEP) to meet your child’s individual needs. Your child will then be enrolled in the
developmental preschool located in the

Language: Expressing wants and needs.
Understanding what is said, listening to parents, teachers and peers,
sequencing and increasing vocabulary.
Cognitive: Learning how to use books,
discovering letters and sounds, chanting poems and singing songs. Counting, pattering and exploring shapes.
Gross Motor: Running, jumping, climbing,
swinging and Ball play.
Fine
Motor: Cutting with scissors, coloring, tracing, formulating letters, shapes
and numbers. Handling manipulatives, painting and puzzles.
Social/Emotional: Sharing materials, ideas and
opinions. Expressing feelings and
establishing positive relationships between peers and staff.
Adaptive: Independent hand washing and
toileting, Taking care of personal belongings, developing independent feeding
and dressing habits. Identifying
and meeting individual needs.

What is the school schedule for the
Developmental Preschool?
The preschool
operates off the same calendar as the district’s calendar with the exception
that it starts one week later in the fall and ends one week earlier in the
spring. We currently have two sessions. We offer a Monday-Thursday schedule that goes
from 12:30-2:40 and we offer a Tuesday and Thursday class that runs from
8:30-10:30. Your child will be placed in
the program most suitable to their developmental levels. Related services such as speech and
occupational therapy will be provided during the child’s regular scheduled
school day.
The Goals of the Developmental
Preschool Program are to:
Provide
school experiences that are developmentally appropriate for pre-kindergarten
students who have special needs.
Identify
the needs, interests and abilities of each child.
Develop and
implement an appropriate individualized program for each child and family.
Provide a
safe and caring environment which encourages growth and independence.
Assist and
support families through shared decision making opportunities and the use of
parent resources.
